Bus inspection scheduled for Monday morning..

Wish me luck.. first inspection since the 80's..

Hoping to get reg. plates and pass safety inspection. Vehicle identification worries me.. chassis number is missing!

And those damn rear brakes, almost no life in them. Have to pop the drums off to get a good look at them. Handbrake equally weak. Does it ever lock the rears on a splittie bus? On sand? or just softly slow you down some... :)

I'm so excited, and nervous. I got this damn bus in 95.... and it had already sat outdoors for years.

I haven't spent much money on it yet, because it has been unclear to me if i can EVER be registered again or not.

Reading the AKE requirements, the back wheels need not to lock.

  • can't have over 30% difference in braking force on the same axle
  • if 500N pedal force does not lock the front brakes, they need to=20 determine the total braking force
  • if they determine the total braking force (all wheels), it can't be = less=20 than 30% of the weight of the car

Hand brake:

  • total force must be at least 18% of the weight of the car

  • can't have more than 70% difference between wheels

To me it seems that if the front brakes are ok and the hand brake works, only requirement would be that the rear brakes work equally bad. ;)

Hahahaha :)

So there is hope for me yet :D

I popped both drums open, and discovered that the driver's side rear axle nut was quite loose. That alone would allow oil to creep in.

The seals must be bad.

Anyway, I cleaned the brakes and shoes with acetone and put them back on the way they were, adjusted the shoes tight.

The brakes are funky all around, but the fronts leave equally long skid marks on sand road. The rear, of course, leaves no mark as it never locks up no matter what. /Correction: handbrake was able to lock ONE rear wheel... so I tightened the cable on the opposite side. Didn't repeat the test again, I had to concentrate on other stuff.
