Correct oil filter for aircooled VW

In this article,

it says that filters designed for watercooled cars (like the Mahle OC-47 that I've been using on my Gene Berg full-flow kit on my 1776 engine) are not suitable for aircooled VWs, as they don't have the proper bypass characteristics and not enough oil gets to critical engine parts at startup. It says to use only the OEM type 4 filter (in this case, a Mahle OC-28). What do you guys think of this claim? Thanks, Larry H

Hard to say. The BPV for this filter is around 8psi. Thats the pressure differential from the input to the output before the bypass opens. Most filters for water-cooled engines have BPV numbers in the low teens. This has little to do with the actual pressure the engine will see, only the "drop" through the filter. Since typically startup pressures will be 10 times this number, I gotta call BS.

However, there is a risk of filter rupture in colder weather, especially with straight weight oils or the ever-popular 20W50 goo that many use. I stick to filters with burst ratings of 500lbs.

What oil filters have burst ratings of 500 lbs. or over? Thanks, Larry H

The HP1 is the most familiar. Personally, I use a Fleetguard HF6107 which is similiar. The HF6107 is a full-flow filter as in no bypass provision and is rated at 505lbs burst.
