Don't Rain on my Thing

May 29, 2005 2 Replies

I know this may get me yelled at but I am willing to risk life and limb to get some thoughts on the subject....

I am thinking about buying a 1973 VW Thing (soft top only, no hard top) and I was wondering what the risks are of leaving it outside (top-down) in the rain. I will not have covered parking for it for about 6 months and I worry that I may not be able to reach it in time in the event of a freak rain storm. (I live in Boise so there is lots of sun in the summer and not much rain.) Any thoughts on potential damage other than wet pants?

Thanks,

Leif

There is only one risk:

RUST

If the car is new or fully restored it will be able to take some beating. Saying that, the interior is not designed to stay open in the rain... For example; Think of all the holes there are in the heaterchannel...

Won't hurt it...much. Clean it out after a big rain. I used to take the hard top off of mine in the spring and wouldn't put it back on till fall. Wet pants is about it.
