e-brake question

the emergency brake in my bus does not work. in the stack of receipts i got with it i found one from jan. of 2002 that states:



'we found that all the emergency cable hardware in the drums were removed and we believe that the reason is because the parts are very hard to find.'



the bentley manual does not go into great detail about the parts involved. would someone please tell me a bit about how the handbrake interacts with the rear brakes, and whether this hardware is in fact hard to find? thanks.

parts? just the lever, the cable and the handle. they are really easy to find.

Look at Fig. 8-1 in your Bentley. Item #15 is the "connecting link" between the shoes. Item #19 is the "clamp" which holds the cable housing to the backing plate. Not labeled is the actuating lever which is hanging off the right-hand shoe in the pic.

Those are the 3 parts you'll need for each rear wheel plus the cables. I think you'll have to scour junk yards/swap meets/ to find them. Don't even think about pulling rear drums in a junk yard!

jim, karls. thanks. now that i know what i am looking at there, it makes total sense. and even more sense in conjuncion with fig. 8-6. cable/lever travel at the bottom gives massive leverage, acting as both a type 1 and 2 lever, depending on whether you count the pressure on the attached shoe, or on the connecting link. (fulcrum point vs. load positioning...) it kind of gives the piston a breath of fresh air.

simple and effective.

now, i have to see which of those parts are missing. it appears that the whole brake lever assembly is there in the front, but i would not be surprised to go out there and find that the pin where you adjust the cables is missing.
