carb: a ticket to hell

hello. first-time vw owner, here. i knew what i was getting into, kind of like the 2-stroke motorcycle that i roadrace...

anyhow, i just bought a very clean 71 type2 and am pulling my hair out on the subject of carb setup. i have a bentley manual, i have found LOTS of sites with LOTS of tuning advice, and i am pretty mechanically inclined to begin with. (see paragraph 1.)

the bus idles very poorly when warm and stalls in stop and go traffic. i have sprayed lots of wd, trying to find a vacuum leak, to no avail. from the troubleshooting guide in the manual, i am wondering if it is a bad brake servo hose. should i pull the hose from the intake manifold and plug the tube there to check for a difference, or is there a better way? the brakes work great, so i doubt that there is any problem with the servo.

the bus sat for about five months previous to me buying it, so i immediately took off the carb and disassembled and cleaned it. the only other puzzling thing is i noticed that when i come to a stop pointing uphill, it idles great. but on level ground or facing downhill, i have to heel-toe it to keep it running.

i throw myself on the mercy of your experience. thanks in advance.
