I've got one setup with an electric pump at the fuel tank. (and keep a spare pump in the glove box.)
So if you are driving and it springs a leak it somehow avoids the exhaust system?
With the filter up front, you're much less likely to have fuel spraying on the hot exhaust at the rear of the car. You do realize these are rear engine cars?
A decent filter is less likely to pull off than the standard hose to through the firewall. Risk is low. Regardless, if there were a leak it is safer in front of the engine. When it is inside the hood area the gas will flow as a pool and accumulate before it catches on fire, thereby making one heck of a fire.
