Five speed trans in a Bug

I have a opportunity to buy a two and make one Porsche 914 transaxle deal I'm working on for my 1970 Standard Bug, also while the car is off the road, for a body rebuild, and I already have a Type Four engine, I'm looking for a way to have a five speed, yes this is a VW only topic here, wouldn't you agree if you had a fairly correct transaxle replacement worth looking into. This car project keeps me broke, and a lot of hard work as it moves along, but, I'm having a blast hanging out here on RAMVA and building a bad ass Bug, without cutting up a good rust free, but not dent free New Mexico car. So my real question is after all that rambling, will it fit in the car?

I remember a few days ago I saw a web page where they gave all kind of details about putting a 5 gear porsche gearbox into a bug. They also had step by step pics, but I cant recall the exact address, if you do a google search you'll probably find a good source of info in gearboxes with the guy who made this webpage.

can one actually use a 914 transaxle in a rear-engine car? I'd think there'd need to be some modifications to the trans made, since the 914 is mid-engine. I've seen a few links on using a porsche 901 trans, which apparently is out of a 912? I dunno.

For what it's worth, the guy selling me the trans owns a European repair shop, and stated that it is a 901 trans, and was already set up for a two litre type four engine, as I remember the 914 is rear engine, four cylinder, the 911 is also rear engine, and six cylinder. Correct me if I'm wrong.

AFAIK the 914 is a mid-engine 4 cylinder, the 911 is a rear-engine 6 cylinder, and the 912 is a rear-engine 4 cylinder. The 911/912 are the same basic chassis, while the 914 is something else entirely.

If it's a 901, it seems like you'd be ok, though there are some mods you'll need to make to the bug to put the transaxle in there. that aircooled link I posted seems fairly detailed...

Hey Gary, The article you advised was very informative, and well within my ability to complete, it looks like I have some research to do, I will say the Euro shop owner, that I mentioned earlier, did say the trans is from a 914 body and the trans model # is a 901, also, a week ago I bought from him a 911 fan, alternator, shroud assy, and I pulled it myself from a flat six sitting on the ground, so I suppose I have more to learn here.
