This past weekend I was driving and I thought it was the heat since we had a heat wave coming through California. I was going to go out of town since I went from Central Cal to Los Angeles back in November. And last month drove up to Shaver Lake near Yosemite without problems.
So anyway I drove about 70 on the freeway for almost half an hour (which I normally drive at that speed) and it started to smell, and I was losing speed. I could see light smoke. I stopped and had smoke coming from the engine and I looked. I had just changed the oil so I knew it wasn't that and offhand didn't know what it could be butI knew it was something. I pulled over for a while and waited. I waited and turned it over but wouldn't start. I waited another 15 minutes and then twenty minutes and then it started and I was going to drive it at least off of the highway. It started to drive and then started to seize, you know shake and stuff. Anyway I had it towed back home and drove it to work this morning. I drove it home and made it but I couldnt' even check the oil. The dip stick was so hot!
When I bought it a year ago I rebuilt the carb and replaced the oil seals in the oil cooler because they were shot and I was leaking so much oil on the left side of the tin. That was done and no leaking oil anymore thank goodness.
I'm going to check the fan and make sure it's clear and no obstruction. It's evening time, but without starting the engine, I did put my hand back and in the shroud it does spin freely. One thing is when I put the flaps and spring mechanism together, I made sure that it springs open. There is no thermostat.
The the bracket springs towards the driver side, and I can pull it towards the passenger side, and then it springs back. This is correct right? This is just one of many things I know I need to check, but I just want to make sure. When I took the fan shroud out a year a go and put it back in with the flaps I noticed that the were set open and bracket tension towards the driver's side.
So, can someone explain the best way to troubleshoot this? I'm just glad I didn't blow up my engine. Thanks in advance for any and all help!
