How can I tell my Carburetor type?

I am thinking that I will have to rebuild my aircooled carburetor... I do not know what type (model) of carb it is though and I want to know which rebuild kit to purchase for it. The engine is tagged as a 1967

1500. Would the carb type be stamped somewhere on it - or from the year and kind of engine is it easy to determine the type.

Thanks!

SOLEX Carburetors (most common) are stamped underneath the name on the reservoir. It will say something like 34PIC3 or 30/34, etc. When facing the engine, go face the left side of the carb and look at the mid section.

Is there such a carb as a PIC 23? Unless I am reading it wrong - I believe that is what it says? Can you tell anything about the carb if that info is correct?

awesome - thanks!

I am going to double check what stamping is on the carb - the lettering is towards the back and kind of turned away so it is hard to read - I will have to shed some light on it and maybe use a mirror...

I looked at the carb again and it is stamped SOLEX 28 PICT (with a 2 in a circle next to it). Does that tell you anything about what year the carb was manufactured and what year (if it is original carb) the engine is from? It has a California sticker that says it is a 1500 engine form 1967 - but no way to tell if that is accurate or not...

AFAIK the 28-PICT carbs only made it to the 1966 Beetles and the 1967 Beetle had the 30-PICT-1 carbs. But California is another world out there! lol

Would I want to keep that 28 PICT-2 carb - or should I move up to a "newer" style carb that will work with my current setup for more fuel flow and power - although I might have to change the disty?

Well how does it run with the 28PICT?

And what do you want?

I have no idea how it runs with it because it has not been run in about 10 years and looks to need an overhaul.... is there a better carb to run besides a 28 PICT-2?
