more gas less response?

Hi Guys and Gals,

Here is something to pick your brains. This weekend I've replaced my clutch cable, bowden tube with all seals and etc. Pulled out throttle cable to relube, since I installed it on the road and didn't lube it, so i figured might as well while I am pulling the pedal assy for clutch cable. and throttle seemed to be sticking anyway. Finally got oil bath air cleaner installed to replace $10 pod filter. Also installed oil temp sender which goes into oil pressure relieve plug.

This is all the work that was done this weekend on the car, just to let you all know what has changed. So now I am experiencing slightly weird problem. If I give it more gas car accelerates really bad, I can just see and feel how it falls flat and looses speed. If I ease it on a little it accelerates fine, just slow getting up the speed. This was a case before, but not as bad and only when the car was cold. I do give it time to warm up. Hit the throttle pedal once before starting, and let it run till it get to 3k rpm then hit the throttle again and let it idle a bit. I have flaps and thermostat in place. Running svda dizzy with 34 pict 3 carb. It was all adjusted and timed at a reputable shop. Also carb was rebuilt recently ( very recently, under 1k miles) if I recall correctly it might be jetted a bit rich. But then again was running very good before this weekend.

Few things that come to mind are

  1. oil bath cleaner has too much oil? Never had one before, i might have over done it with the oil level. although i filled up between the bottom plate and the wider part of it.

  1. cleaner is bit too big (68 cleaner on 63) and hits the decklid. Which causes manifold to twist which creates vac leak at the dp castings. Those boots aren't exactly in the tip top shape.

What else am I missing that could be causing bad response?

Thanks as always,

Anton

Plugged fuel filter or pinched fuel hose.

Look down the carb throat (engine off) and watch the accel pump jet as you slowly open the throttle by hand. Jet should begin soon after leaving idle position and continue smoothly till fully open.

Thanks Jim.

If that's not the case what would be the culprit? bad accelerator pump, jet, accelerator pump not adjusted correctly?

Anton

Any of the above. Have a look and report back. Jim

Ok just drove back home from work. It was better. so I park pop the air cleaner off and you will never guess what I found! A piece of packing popcorn got suck right next to the choke butterfly! And that's after I have checked and got all of it out of the cleaner. It runs a lot better now. Still a bit of a hesitation but anywhere near as it was before. I tried to move the throttle but I didn't exactly see a jet, I can hear it and see "steam" coming out somewhere in the throat but not exactly a jet....

Good thing you found it! I just read your thread and was going to tell you that the culpret was probably related to the air cleaner or intake in some way. I had a similar experience. Had just rebuilt my engine a few years ago.. was driving it to break it in and for some unknown reason, when I tried to get up to speed on the expressway it bogged down TERRIBLY! I had to feather the gas and barely press on the pedal or it would just SLOW DOWN! Well, for the life of me I could not figure it out. It took 5 miles just to coax it up to a top speed of 50 mph! On the flip side, I was getting a consistent 45 MPG! Well, this car was my daily driver (since my son had totaled my Honda Civic) so I had to do something. Dallas, TX traffic can be brutal!

Turned out I finally noticed that the oil-bath air cleaner had something inside the top. It appeared to be almost like a flat piece of wood... but the top was sealed! Well, it turned out to be an old "mud dawber" (wasp) nest! I was able to break it up with a screwdriver and extrecate it. I was a little horrified since I realized that as it shook around on top of the intake, blocking most of the air, it was probably dropping grains of grit down the carb and into my carefully rebuilt engine. Oh well!

After removing that, it ran GREAT! I have even gotten it up to the mid 80s (not bad for a 1.3 litre 1965 engine)! Oh course she still complains if I run her over 65 very long, but even when driving hard and fast the mileage is never less than 32 MPG (US).

Yeah, it was back to running ok. But still before engine warms up completely I am getting similar symptoms, just not as bad. School just started and I've been driving a bit earlier in the morning. Nothing too crazy just around 7:30 am. I warm up my engine, let it run for a few minutes, and take off. Have to rev it a bit when starting in first, then easy in the second, and third is trouble some. It lasts for about 3 miles, ride is fairly short, then starts to get better. My oil bath is 69 and I don't have a cable for the flap inside hookedup, nor do I have heaterboxes so the warm air hose is not inplace. Would this make engine run so poorly? Or do I have to go back to accelerator pump/jet and deduce there? Maybe it's my preheat that is not doing it's job and I am getting carb ice? This is getting kinda annoying and really wanna be able to drive it regularly without looking like I don't know how to drive stick.

Thanks, Ant> Good thing you found it! I just read your thread and was going to tell you
