I've done all but turn the crank pulley. That must be the key ]:-) Going out with a GFH just in case.
Thanks.
4play (@\|/@)(.\~/.)It didn't want to work until I pulled out the grease gun. I guess it doesn't was to be screwed just yet. :-O

The nut is in the air-cleaner housing where you put it for safe-keeping just before pulling the engine.

Did you use a clutch alignment tool? and i don't mean your finger...really....i put off buying a clutch alignment tool the first few times i pulled an engine and removed the clutch...(not only vw's) and once i bought one i couldn't believe i had waited that long...if you did use an alignment tool, make sure the engine is at the same angle as the tranny..the two won't mate properly when they are not on the same level(plane)...also it sometimes helps to turn the pulley a bit to help line up the splines in the clutch and the input shaft splines...good luck, it *will* go if the clutch is aligned properly, and you are hitting it straight.. Joey
That's because you pissed off Joey T! A similar thing happened to me and I had to remanufacture my shifter plate. How he manages to bend steel halfway across the country... dunno, but I'm really impressed!
Actually, put the tranny into gear and wiggle the engine in a rotating fashion. It will suddenly push right in easily. Do not force.
Ah poor joey. He/she is just trying to make up in ego what it lacks elsewhere. :-)
Besides who's joey? joey asked to be kill filed. So.... Kill killl. killlll. filed!

Good catch, John ... I forgot that detail about putting it in gear.

Believe me, it was *not* a pretty sight ... I have a hard time running in those spike heels .... hehe.
I didn't catch that one... But it was already in gear...

Friend of mine was messing around in a parts yard once, and there was this pile of scrap transmissions. One was a broken VW one, and he absentmindely reached out and wne to turn the shaft, and it just slid out into his hand. Owner said keep it, so he put it in his pocket and went home with his clutch alignment tool.
