Now's my chance!

71 bus. Jeepers it would be nice to install a REAL oil filter, but conventional wisdom advises trying to really clean out the oil system because gunk and gloop can break loose and plug up the oil galleries. (Whatever they are -- sounds like a place where old cans of oil are put on display). HOWEVER, this engine has only 3,200 miles on it!

Is there a oil filter kit for dummies for this engine?

Cool -- that's a start -- it's the oil return. Now I guess I need an oil send adapter, some hoses with threaded bits on the end, a standalone filter holder thingy, and some clamps for the hoses . . . has anyone published a how-to for this project?

As follow-up, I asked my local VW shop to quote installing a good outboard oil filter, an oil cooler, and add oil pressure and oil temp gauges. They came back with about $560, split pretty evenly between parts and labor.

A couple kind souls have provided some bits and pieces of oil-modifications for me, but I'm hoping I can find a really good "how to" so I can determine how practical is it a job for me to do. Maybe VW Trends ran such a thing?

Oh -- if it requires pulling the engine, welding or metal fabrication, I'm going to farm it out to the shop. That's well beyond my meager skills or toolset.
