OT Dialing while driving

Peter,

research shows that ANY distraction increases the risk of accident. So while voice activated dialing and handsfree phones would likely lower the risk of accident compared to a typical handheld set, they still have higher risk than NOT using a cell phone of any kind. There has been talk in VA and MD of requiring teenaged drivers to NOT have passengers. Seems teens talk too much with other kids in the car, get distracted and crash at a higher rate than teen drivers that do not have fellow teen passengers. Other distractors, changing the radio station, putting on make-up, shaving, eating/drinking, listening to the radio, talking. Anything but concentrating on the act of driving increases the risk of accident. So while hands-free is likely less risky than hand-held, it is still riskier than refraining from use. - DB

Interesting article about driving while talking on the cell phone. It has become illegal in some areas to talk on the phone without a headset, but people in SUV's are continuing to do it and getting fines. Perhaps the should have the power steering belt cut on their Expidition for 90 days, so they will be concentrating on steering with both hands instead of yaking on the phone and causing accidents.

I wonder if systems like OnStar, which have personal calling available are factored in as well....Since OnStar doesn't have a handset to be holding on to, would that reduce the chance of an accident?

I'm seriously tempted to get a cell-phone jamming system. Install it in my trunk with a linear booster and antenna. Knock 'em all out for 200 yards around me.

that would be more dangerous than letting it be....then everyone that was in the middle of a call withing 200 yards of you would be concentrating on their phone as they tried to redial.... JT

................Don't underestimate BIG BROTHER Chris. Those pinheads in the government think that they can outlaw just about anything. Getting rid of potential distractions could concievably include no more drive through windows for a burger & fries, no more cigarette lighters, cup holders, radio.......who knows?

it would have to include those as well as no passengers, and no others on the highway, no scenery(natural or manmade) within sight of the road, etc....how are they gonna eventually "get rid of" ones own mind/imagination, which can be the biggest distraction? JT
