Prime a fuel pump ?

I have an old fiberglass buggy that I haven't had running in 5 years . My son really wants to get it going again . I drained the old gas about 3 years ago so the tank was empty . Now it will fire right up with pouring gas down the carb . but I can't seem to get fuel up to the fuel pump . The fuel line is clear as far as I know. Is the pump so dry it will not pump ? If this can happen, how do I prime the pump ? Thanks, Raz

BTW: It is a duel port 1600 if that makes a difference.

Does fuel come out of the line if you disconnect if from the input side of the pump?

No it doesn't . Do I have something plugged between the tank and the pump ? I guess I could pull the hose off of the bottom of the tank and blow air through it and see if I get airflow back to the inlet hose of the pump . Raz

You can apply some air pressure in the fuel line at the back, towards the tank, to unblock any restrictions. You can use an air compressor, but lower the pressure to 15-20 psi, or a rubber gas line may get unconnected from a metal gas line and fuel start leaking all over. Probably a rubber gas line has collapsed (under the tank?) obstructing fuel flow.

Could the pump be shot? If the membrane is torn....

Or the tank being dry let whatever gunk was in the bottom to solidify and block the exit tube. That happened with me, except I didn't drain the tank - it slowly leaked out over a year through a pinhole rust spot.

Roger, I drove this buggy into the barn , built a new house and shed . And now like I said my son (a 10 year old farm boy) wants to get it going as he thinks he wants to drive it :-) . I told him that if he helps me get it going that he could possibly drive it down the lane and on a couple dirt roads nearby . I am sure once we get it going, good old dad will remember how much fun it was and the restoration project will begin. Raz

If you plan on blowing air in the lines, open the fuel cap first so the tank wouldn't pressurize.
