Problem downshifting in 67 squareback

I am looking at purchasing a 67 squareback. The seller says that there is a problem downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. Any ideas what would cause this problem? Also, how hard is it to get a transmission out of a type 3?

Thanks in advance,

Vince

.......................Where are you? I have a type3 swing axle tranny that might be useable or if not, it could be used as a core exchange for a rebuilt one. I'd sell it for $50 but I'm in upstate NY. As for removal, you pull the engine first and then the tranny comes out very easily in about 30 min. just like type1's & buses. The downshifting problem might go away with new tranny grease (synthetic) but it probably still needs new synchros eventually. If you don't want to take a chance on a used one like mine and if you don't want to fool around with a core exchange,

sells rebuilt ones outright.

Well, having driven a 67 squareback before, I can feel your pain. The one I drove had exactly the same problem...wonder if it's the same one! Is it blue? With some rust on the lower right rear quarter? Anyway, I can most deffinitely tell you the problem is a worn synchro ring. Synchro rings are corkscrew like things that line up the gears on the teeth before you shift into another gear. When they're worn out, you can't shift without a grind, or double-clutching it to avoid a grind. Once from 3rd to neutral, and again from neutral to 2nd. However, in my 67, I learned to live with it by pulling from 3rd to neutral, pushing the shifter over to the right in neutral, then back left, then down into 2nd...all in one clutch disengage. For some reason, this avoided a grind. Who knows? Try test driving the car. As for taking out the tranny, or repairing it, I have no experience or advice here.

If you like the car, take it on face value that the entire tranny is f**ked up. offer 500 to take it off their hands and let nature take it course. have fun.
