That certainly is a possibility Speedy. Is will be about my 7th time I've pulled it. Got it down to a science so it doesn't bother me to do it again.

Mystery solved Speedy. Since I had the starter rebuilt locally, I took the starter back to them. Turned out they had assembled it incorrectly. It was spinning in the opposite (i.e. counterclockwise instead of clockwise) direction.

Wow, I didn't know that was possible....

BTW, the different lengths are just early and late 12V years, all made by Bosch. The short ones are later and have alum field windings.
