So what's an inexpensive timing light suitable for Dad to get on Christmas that the kids can afford? Might use it about twice a year.
And what about that gadget needed to synch two carbs? I'd like to turn the idle down a bit, but hesitate without some means of making sure things are in balance.
...timing on a VW is very important. Its now how often you use it...its that it will do the job sufficiently when you do, A dial back timing light is real nice....especially if you don't have a dgree pulley. I had my craftsman for about 5 years of heavy abusive usage...and it has worked very well....now, of course, Mario has it...with the rest of my tools and VW parts....but its prolly still working well even for that thief. ;-) If they can swing it this would be the ticket....but its prolly to expensive....so I dunno...maybe somone else will have some idaes. I try not to buy cheap tools if I can help it....even if its something you only use a couple times a year....that will still add up over the course of a lifetime....

I usually get a meter or 3 length of small plastic tubing and cut it in half. Put one end of each tube in the carb throat about the same distance, and the other ends in your ears. You don't have to be Hooleo Iglesias to be able to tell when they are in "tune" (which is a bit funny since he's tone deaf anyway). A tiny bit of difference in fuel and they make a LOT different hiss.

However, since you were to dim to do so, and decided to waste bandwidth (along with the oxygen you are currently wasting) by calling me on *my* suspected bandwidth wasting violation....well I figured the least I could do is be charitable, and try to lay things out to where the "special" students could comprehend.

No, no. It's hugely more entertaining to watch you bunch a' nimrods go 'round and 'round on this one.
I like it. Direct. No moving parts, no batteries to wear out. Also looks funny. Has all the elements. Rubber hoses outta my ears. Combine them with my white lab coat and if I get a fright wig to go with and some really thick goggles, it's time once again for Herr Doktor Leipzig to perform some of his bizarre animal experiments on the internal combustion engine with the lovely Inge! Maybe some kind of *sexual* animal behavioral experiments.

I'm kind of partial to Craftsman tools from Sears. That lifetime warranty kind of does it for me. If you're in the business of repairing cars, or have won the lottery, then go Snap-On.
