Recommendations for a shop to do a '76 Bug restoration? - NJ/Eastern PA

Greetings - I want to get my '76 Beetle restored. If anyone knows of a good body shop that they can recommend in NJ or Eastern PA, I'd really appreciate it! I don't want to take it to a body shop that isn't familiar with 'em.

Thanks! -Gary

................There are so few bugs left on the roads in our region here in the NE that it's probably a better idea to search for a reputable shop that is known and recommended by the rod & custom crowd instead. Much of what is out there is of very good quality from the shops that do this type of specialized paint & body work. Your community probably has a club nearby that meets during the warm months on Saturday nights. The average shop that does insurance work on late model cars will probably be reluctant and might not do a very good job on any vintage car. Just remember that this a labor intensive type of work that doesn't come cheap and a good shop can always give you a list of satisfied customers who you can contact for reference before you sign that contract (estimate). Contract? That's right, I've become convinced that paint and body work along with other major repairs on cars should always be spelled out in a written and signed estimate that is binding on both you and the shop. Several people here at this newsgroup have learned some expensive lessons on this question of putting a major business transaction in writing.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions! I'll check around to see if I can find some local resources, especially among the custom folks. I did a quick online search for a VW club in my area (central NJ) and didn't come up with anything, I'll look further but if anyone has info on one please post it or point me towards their web site.

I understand that the body work is labor intensive. I don't have bucks spilling out of my pockets, so I don't have bucks to waste on a poor job either. I'm not looking for cheap - I'm looking to have the work done properly. As you suggest, I'll look for recommendations by the rod & custom crowd. Recommendations gladly accepted!

Thanks again! -Gary
