Rust question

Ok for all of you body guys out there here is a question. back in '92 when my father got me my first car, '70 Bug, I had it repainted. I striped all of the paint off with a paint striper and told the shop to sand the rest off (not much was left) and then repaint. well not knowing what I know now has screwed me. Up at the roof I have rust between the 2 panels that make up the rain gutter. I went and had the car acid dipped to remove all of the crap that has accumulated in the past 16 years and do not think that it removed the rust. Is there a way to peal back the one panel that I can see to gain enough access to the roof panel to sandblast it , prime it and fold back into place?

I believe that the VW dealership body shops had a special tool to unroll and re-roll that rain gutter seam so that roofs could be replaced. Someone on here might be able to give you the VW part number for the tool and you might locate one, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I would think that what you did with the acid dip would be a good first step. In the absence of unrolling and re-rolling that seam I would probably try to find the least viscous rust converter/neutralizer solution I could and flood the seam with it and hope that it wicked into the seam and converted the rust to something inert.

That is a tough one. I've had a bug with rust in the gutter seam and have stripped and repainted it and had the rust come back. However, like you that was when I was much younger and didn't have as much knowledge or resources to bear on the problem.

you could pry back the roof lip then hammer and dolly it back toghter but " if its not broke don't fix it' there are alot of access holes to every part of the body of a beetle. if yours was acid dipped it should have removed all of it. you could go and spray a number of different things to prevent it from spreading.

I have seen all the common areas that beetles rust,(beaing from NY) look close at places that metal has been bent, or water or dirt accumulates. most rust starts from the inside out so you can do alot of treating and preventing even after the bug is painted. You acid dipped it theres nothing more after that then taking the whole thing apart.

go to calf. and get a rust free body...lol

Spay an epoxy primer in every hole you can, buy a gallon of good quality and hit every hole and opening you can , it sands easy and is a great rust preventer, or Por 15 .

sorry everyone was to busy bitching about me they missed this one

You're the last one to be giving advice on rust treatment.
