selant for cylinder head studs? 77 bus w/ 2.0

Hello,

I rebuilt my '77 bus engine 15 years ago but am having to do it again since the bolts that hold the cam to the cam gear came loose on the reground cam I had installed. I originally used Permatex avaition sealer to seal the case, case bolts and head studs. One side was leaking before the break down, it was hard to tell where it was coming from, and I assumed it was the push rods tubes and it probably was. Before I bolt the heads on later today I was wondering if there is something better for sealing the heads that is readily available at my local car parts store. I used aviation sealer again for the case and case bolts. Not sure if high-temp RTV (copper stuff) is suitable. I also have Curil T made by Elring, but the package says up to 250 degrees C -

BTW: Ibought new heads.

TIA, Brad

Hi Brad,

Kinda of topic. Just curious where did you get the heads from?

Thanks, Ant> Hello,

Hi Anton,

Italy. $350 each. I had installed them on a customer vehicle years ago. I asked about any issues and they said none. The only thing they said was people would like if they were German, but they last fine. I have done lots of business with them in the past having owned a repair shop (not VW, old Mercedes) and so I trust and value their opinion. I did have to grind between the exhaust ports a little with a dremel to get the headers to fit easily. I could have reused my old heads, but the valve ends had dished a bit and I was already using 1mm shims under the barrels.

Thanks Brad,

Permatex is recomended by the book. You could try looking through shoptalkforums.com forums. Looks like that's the sealer by popular demand. You can try posting there see if you can get Jake's opinion if he is not too busy... I know he pretty particular on the sealants, lubricants and gaskets.
