shifter bushing...yet another post

Hi everyone. THis weekend, I plan on replacing my shifter bushing, and replacing the rear coupler inserts with ones made from urethane in my 73 std. I've read about a zillion old posts and instructions on various websites (John Henry's, aircooled.net, the angelfire shifter page...etc.) I feel like I have a pretty good handle on what to do, but I just wanted to make a last minute check for any hints any wise men may have for me. I ordered my parts from Aircooled.net, and they said the shifter bushing does not include the metal circlip. However, my new bushing has a metal ring around it....what is this? Also, I'm unsure about removing and replacing the shifter itself. What position should it be in before I remove it? Neutral? Thanks ~Anthony

If I recall, you want to have the shifter in 2nd or 4th, so that it's pulling the shift rod *forward*, making it easier to get to and deal with.

And keep in mind which way the plate is positioned. You'll want the ski jump to be going up and toward the front of the car.

Don't know what the metal ring is all about. I could guess, but this is (usually) a family channel.
