HELP! Shifter adjustment?

Nov 22, 2003 1 Replies

Hey everyone. I just installed new urethane coupler inserts and a new shifter bushing in my 73 Std. beetle. However, after putting everything back together, I took the car for a drive, and there is now a loud whiring noise that comes with acceleration in all gears. I don't know what I'm doing trying to adjust the shifter plates up front, I think that's the problem. How do I do this? I fiddled with it in a parking lot just now for about 45 minutes, sometimes the whirring is worse, sometimes it's not too bad, but it's always there no matter where I have the shifter adjusted. I can get into all gears. What's going on? New Urethane inserts too stiff? I would appreciate a response ASAP, since I need the car to drive soon! Thanks ~anthony

Does the noise go away if you put your hand on the shifter? If so, pack some heavy wheel bearing grease in the base of the shifter.
