smog

car wont ideal can i still pass smog i live in reno nv and it is a 1973 vwthing

Why wont it idle? I'd bet the smog guys wont put up with that.

I wouldn't put up with that!! Check your compression in all the cylinders. If they are good, we can work with that. If not, we have to tear things apart. In that case, I hope this isn't your only mode of transportation. Mine was for years.

If the compression is good, (check your manuals) then there is probably a vacuum leak. Common causes for a vacuum leak is the intake manifolds to head, the boots on the 3 piece intake manifold, and the carburetor shaft wearing into the carb body.

You have to smog a '73 in Nevada? My '74 is exempt here in California. I thought CA was the most strict state.

Illinois is stricter where it has smog checks. Anything after 67 has to pass smog test in the Chicago area and St. Louis area.
