Stupid ??s for a 71VW

Need a bit of help. After finally getting many mechanical things fixed and now I can legally drive a 71VW, I have a stupid question.

How the heck is the back of the back seat suppose to lay down. I thought there was release bar or handle on the upper portion of the back, but, I'll darned if I can find it. I can see what looks like a catch on both sides, but I can't get it to move....

Would appreciate a little direction.

Thanks jjjj

Ummm, you don't say what Type of '71 VW you have, but my '71 Super Beetle (and all other Beetles of that vintage, I believe) had a 'button' pull on the outside edge of the backrest on both driver and passenger seats. Simply a smaller version of a hockey puck stuck to the side of your seat! If yours isn't there, I'd suggest that either you don't have the stock seats, OR whoever re-upholstered them simply laid the cloth or vinyl right over the release.

I may be of no help here, but I have two 71's...both Standard beetles,..................Both the "nothing on them" version. Mine bothe have a clear plastic loop of a strap, attached to the release mechanism, that is often hard to see, but if yours is there, should be accessible if you run your hand down beside the drivers side of the seat, at the top (drivers side USA).................slide the loop out and pull gently, it should come open without much effort.

It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs. -- Oxford University Press, Edpress News

Ahh...should read more carefully, Larry. On my '74' there is a loop about a foot below the top of the rear seat on the driver's side cleverly hidden between the edge (end) of the seat and the body wall. Dig the loop out, pull it and 'presto'. I assume the '71' has a similar scheme.

Arrggghhh .... my 'pea brain' immediately thought front seats, for whatever reason.

That being the case, I believe Wolfsburg West carries the plastic loops for the rear seat.
