Can I put 12 V DC across the solenoid to see if it works or does it need the voltage dropped? I see that there is a resistor in series when I look in the Chiltons manual.

briefly, yes you can do it. Just a brush won't do any harm. Touch the terminal and disconnect in one swift move. You could probably use a little 9 volt battery too if you want. ANY voltage applied continuously is beyond what they are designed for.. remember they only get energized in short bursts when the engine runs. Plus the fuel flowing through them acts as a coolant.
