I thried using the 'search' blank to find some old topics for this group and they do not show up.
Any tips for doing so?

Blame Google. They've mucked up the old archives (apparently in attempt to make money off the ads).
I did a Yahoo search for rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled . There are several sites that have archived many of the old topics.
