Travis, I look foreward to your adventures and share them with my sons. If you take the energy you put into your bug adventure and take up something else, share it with us also as I'm sure it will be entertaining..........(Unless you take up playing with yourself or start dating outside your own species) Dennis

If you're serious about off-roading and you want to be able to 'tweak' it, too... A CJ5 simply cannot get into the places that an old flat-fender can. Stay away from CJ2, GPW, MB - the running gear is too lightweight. CJ3, CJ3B (high-hood) or M-38 are the way to go. They have shorter wheelbase, are narrower, have much shorter aproach and departure angle than any of the round fender models. It's simply the right thing to do. The biggest problem (besides finding one that is solid enough to build from) is that all of these had 5.38 gear ratios which is a bit low (about 55 mph screaming flat-out!) They can be swapped out to 4.88's though which gives you reasonable road speed - faster than you feel comfortable in an 80 inch wheelbase! Don't do anything to increase ground clearance like puttin the springs on top of the axles - these were the original jeep layout and are agile enough to be able to traverse areas that the later models cannot. I prefer the softer spring rate of the WW2 models for added agility, but the lighter running gear isn't worth the tradeoff. To put it another way, those deep ruts you've seen in the muddy areas - the old flatfender jeep will crawl along there with one wheel in the center high part and one wheel outside of the rut whereas the roundfenders will drop into one rut or the other and often high center. The visibilty in a low hood flatfender is so much better than a CJ5 that you can thread it between trees that a CJ5 won't even fit between.

Then again, a Mighty-Mite would be great if you could get one. Not much for highway use (the suspension folds under) but they ARE air cooled, seat 4 adults (?) have fully independent suspension with inboard-mounted brakes and can be driven with three wheels after you blow one off on a land mine! They have something like 11 inches of ground clearance (jeeps have around 7 at the 'banjo') straight through. They have a 65 inch wheelbase if my memory serves me and are narrow enough to fit inside a full-size pickup bed. They're all aluminum and if you work out at the gym through the winter, by spring you should be able to lift at least the back end totally off the ground all by yourself! They used a Wisconsin V-4 aircooled engine, a 4 speed tranny and I don't remember if the transfer case had hi/lo or not. I almost bought one instead of my last jeep (which was a M-38A-1 that I put a WW2 flatfender body on, but it still had the bigger, less-agile chassis) The Mighty Mites could not be sold complete - they were all cut in half, so I'd have had to buy at least two halves and weld it together! They wouldn't allow them to be sold intact because the were not safe for on-road use - like the Ford military jeeps with similar suspension. Interesting side note is that Ford had a retrofit solution to the snap-roll problem but the guvment didn't go for it.

That is a mistake. I know many here don't agree (and I know I've given you some crap over it in the past, but that was all in good fun, as you well know.) No matter what your intentions with any car, start out with the best example of the vehicle you can find and afford. It does not matter if you want a full restoration or a hot rod or a dirt tracker, start with the best car you can find. If you start with a basket case you will most likely end up with a basket case...

Knowing Travis, the nitrous would be hooked up to a face mask that he would wear every time he drove the jeep.

Nah, but that does remind me... My wife tells me her brother (I've never met him) who lives in Washington state used to have his Jeep set up so that the windshield washer reservoir held whiskey instead of washing fluid, and the nozzle was piped into the interior of the Jeep so if he ever got stranded in the middle of the cold with no way out, he could just hit the wiper washer button and "fortify" his Coke. Hmm... Sounds like a VERY easy mod... Now where to mount the Dixie horn... (Said in Mr Rourke, from "Fantasy Island" voice) Where to mount the Dixie horn.... INDEED!!!! *insane giggling spastic laughter*

Looks nice, Max, but I'm set on a Jeep now. Why are you selling it? To make room for the LCB? ;-)

You ready?

Since I have the Baja, I don't really need a truck!

Since we don't have an actual dog-house, I'd wind up sleeping in it.

How comfy is the LCB anyway? :P
