transmission oil: GL5 = nightmare?

Hi,

I've renewed the seals of the rear wheel bearings on my 69 swing-axle bug 4 months ago and filled the gearbox with new oil (GL5). Surfing on the web I've now found that you should never use GL5 oil but mineral GL4. GL5 seems to corrode the brass synchromesh. Now i've drained the oil completely (while changing the left bearing because it became noisy) and I want to full it again with GL4.

One big question..... Can the gearbox been damaged in the 4 months while it was filled with GL5. Only drove 230miles with it. What can I do to remove the remains of the old GL5? Maybe change the oil again after 100miles?

Thanks,

I doubt that anything bad at all has happened in that time.

A few years back I rcvd info from Rob (of Rob and Dave's:

saying that the original GL-5 was slightly corrosive to *some*gearbox parts that might have had zinc makeup. He went on to say that the later standard for GL5-MT1 corrected the problem.

So far, I have not seen great piles of transmission corpses stacked up like cord wood due to GL-5 failures.
