That's probably the black faced version that came out for '72-3.

Had a 1970 1600 DP beetle speedo all the way against the little peg on the right side coming down Afton Mt. on I-64E. 97mph indicated? Don't know how accurate the speedo was but remember wondering how I'd explain a 90+mph speeding ticket to my Dad. I was 18. Front end sure felt funny. Amazing that we ever get out of our teens.
For some reason I thought a stock 1970 as described above would top out at
85mph under ideal conditions on a flat road.David

your 70 wasn't stock with a dual port engine...1970 US spec had a 1600 single port(non doghouse) engine...and i know Afton mountain all too well....very good for getting up speed...either side, but especially on the east side...its just straight down the mountain... JT
Amazing that we ever get out of our teens.
Anyone agree?
I've got a '69 owners manual right here. It states the "Maximum and cruising speed" at 78 mph, 125 kph. My 69 resoration project will have the engine built up to 1600 dp, so won't be stock. Hoping to have it on the road by end of year.
I've owned bugs from the time I started driving and the stupid things I've done in them, yea its a wonder.
Joey is right. the 1970 beetle was not DP but SP. I had dual port motors in it later. For those who don't know, I-64E down Afton Mt. is a long, long, downhill. You could anything that rolls going fast.

whatcha figure...about a mile and a half at maybe 30 degree incline?maybe not quite that steep...not sure..but it can be fun...heh.. JT
I'd run the stock '69 at an aggressive, indicated 83 mph flat out the Mass Pike and up the Northway. Uphill a bit slower, of course. I took it to 90 downhill once, but it was scarey. This was when it when the car was 2 years old and accumulating maybe 20K mi a year. That is a whole lot different than how I drive a Beetle these days.
