I would try the 80 w90 synthetic GL-4 from Amsoil.com. Sorry I don't know how much you need. My '73 with independent rear suspension holds about 2.75 quarts.
Everybody has a favorite. I put Royal Purple MaxGear in my '64 Bug. It's supposed to be GL4/GL5 rated and safe for soft metals. I haven't put too many miles on it since I put it in but it shifts nice and smooth. Of course that would probably be true for any clean fresh oil. : )

i just changed the tranny oil today in my 50 beetle. i use redline mt-90. i've also used amsoil from aircooled.net.
Any GL4 or lower is ok, apparently GL5 also spec'd as MT-1 should be approved for yellow metals..
