1998 Volvo V40 Gearbox/Clutch Problem

Hi

I pulled up on my drive the other day and when I tried to change into reverse gear it would not let me try though I might. It would also not get into forward gear. I had to turn the engine off and push the car back. With the engine off I can select all gears no problem but as soon as I start the engine I cannot get it in gear, I get complete resistance whatever gear I try to select. I want to know if it looks like gearbox trouble or is it just the clutch. the pedal depresses ok and I replaced the slave cylinder about 6 weeks ago, no signs of fluid leaks.

Help please because I do not want to replace the clutch, put it all back together and find the gearbox is shafted!!!

Cheers in advance.

clutch doesn't release

Your clutch isn't releasing. Start the engine in neutral to build up vacuum in the brake booster, then turn it off. Put it in top gear, press in the clutch and stomp on the brake as hard as you can. Try to start the car for an instant. If the clutch is just stuck to the pressure plate or flywheel this should free it. If the car lurches forward, then you have a problem. Since you say the pedal feels normal, then the problem is not with the actuation of the clutch, the transmission will have to come out.

Thanks guys, my mechanic confirms this as well. I am getting the clutch replaced. Not bad seeing as though it has 345k miles and this was it's first clutch!! (advantage of lots of motorway driving)

Merry Christmas.
