2001 Volvo V40 Immobilizer problem

Hi I have intermittent problems starting my car. When I turn the key to start the engine, the lights and dash lights all come on and then I get the X through the car light flashing on my dash and the car won't start. after 10-15 tries I might get lucky or if I turn it really fast it will start. When it does start however, it takes a couple of turns bc I think the fuel pump was cut off?

One weird thing... I had this problem before and it went away but when I took it to get fixed, the guy disconnected my battery and it came back. Is it inter-related? My battery is newer. about 1 year old?

Any ideas?

btw does anyone have a FR Headlight Wiper motor for sale?

Does it happen with both keys? If not, it could be the chip in one of the keys is gone.

The antenna ring, the receives info from the key chip is a weak point. There's lots of info on this at groups.google.com, search on "antenna ring"

But I don't get why it's inconsistient. If the antenna ring is "weak" then why does it work well sometimes and sometimes not? Is it weak to begin with and something is interfereing with it? I talked to the dealer and they said it could be the antenna ring or ignition coil.

You need to see if there are any DTC's set which could help you narrow down your failing part if it is the ant ring it is a little bit harder then Volvo's other lines this takes about 2 hours to replace as the steering wheel & various items have to be removed Glenn

Sometimes it's best not to ask why, that part will drive you crazy. It may be because it's weak and in some areas and/or at some times there's more outside interference than at others. Or the temperature could affect it, or the way you park your car the magnetic field of the earth could affect it. Just accept that it happens, and be thankful that it has happened to many before you so that there's experience to help you out.
