240 gas mileage

Aug 25, 2003 8 Replies

Hi there, I've just bought a "89" 240 with around 150000 miles and I run only 14.5 miles per gallon (15 l/100 kms). Think it's a bit too much ! What do you think about that ? Any help will be appreciate.

Auto ?

I get around 10/100 HW down to about 12/100CC With an auto. Small mods. Extra weight. Very good mech condition. City cycle is often flat footed :)

How long have you been driving it ? How do you drive ? Does it need a service ? If there is nothing wrong with your car (And it's in good condition) then you might just need to give it a really good thrashing. A nice hard drive from time to time can do a 240 good.

Sounds low to me. I have an '83 with an auto tranny (315,000 miles) that gets 18 to 19 mpg in mixed city / highway driving. My '86 with a 4 speed gets 22 to 25 in same.

A bad Air Mass Meter (AMM) can cause poor mileage. See if you get any black smoke out of the exhaust (should get absolutely none) -- this would indicate running rich. Any hint of gasoline smell in the exhaust would indicate same.

I get 15 in town with air on 960. Never done much better with any other volvo.

15? My 164E did better than that. Yikes.

Hi Phil,

Our '93 245 "Classic" uses on average about 9.7 litres per 100 Kilometres (about 29-30 mpg Canadian or 24-25 mpg US) All local driving, no highway. It has ~200 000 Kilometres on the clock ( ~124 000 miles). There's something sadly wrong with your '89. Are there no other symptoms?

Hi, I have an 88 240 with 290,000 miles on it and I get around 27 mpg (no joke). The AMM and ignition system were replaced last year along with the entire exhaust. Those repairs made a big difference for me MPG wise....

Hi Josh,

Is that 27 mpg US or Imperial (Canadian) gallons? and is it highway miles or local?

Interested. Andy I.
