740 - random stalling

May 25, 2008 5 Replies

For some unexplained reason my '91 740 wagon has quit on me twice in the last month. Both times I was coasting to a stop to a red light and then all of the dash board lights came on and the car quit. I couldn't immediately restart it (engine cranked-over but didn't start). After a few minutes it started and ran without a problem - until it stalled again three weeks after the first time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi "mgb",

I've had that. Check for loose vacuum hose.

Good Luck. Andy I.

Well it's new enough that the wiring should be fine. Could be the fuel pump relay, also does the tach needle drop like a rock, or does it coast down with RPM of the engine?

Not sure about the tach - didn't notice. I'll watch that if/when this happens again.

If it drops like a rock, then you have an electrical problem cutting off the ignition, if it coasts down, then you have a fuel problem.

Or it could be the fuel pump going out as I just had happen. The shop I use was able to put a pressure gauge on the fuel line to see if the pump was pumping with enough pressure and mine wasn't so I replaced it with a new one. Bruce
