90 740GL fuel pump

My girlfriends 90 740GL has developed an intermitent problem with the fuel pump not coming on. It has the Regina fuel system with a single in tank pump. The symptoms are fuel starvation when trying to start it, warm or cold makes no difference. Thing is, tapping on the sending unit when starting cures the problem and the car will start and continue to run without problems. Turn it back off and the next time it may start, or may not. If not, tapping on the sending unit once again solves it. I'm almost certain I'm going to have to replace the pump, but was hoping maybe there is something else I could be missing. Is there anything on the sending unit that could have a bad connection that could be fixed, or does it just about have to be a problem within the pump itself?

There could be a connection problem where the wires go through the top of the sender. However if it's not obvious then it's probably best not to try to fix it as any error will cause a fuel leak.

What are you calling the sending unit. If you mean the fuel pump relay behind the fuse panle, replace it. It is a known problem.
