My wife's 96 850 turbo wagon has developed a problem of coming out of park after the car sits all day while she's at work. What controls the locking device on the shifter that would cause the car not to come out of park? She thinks that if she lets the car idle for a while it will shift to drive. She also has tried relocking the car from the outside with the key and then unlocking the doors again and it comes out of park. Is this mechanism controlled by vacumm or is it electrical? Any suggestions as to where I might start solving this problem will be greatly appreciated. (I know she wants an Suv but this car only has 140K on it).

Hi, Is it possible that the steering wheel needs to be turned one way or the other, to release tension that may be on the parking- steering-locking interconnection? Good lock, Brad

The microswitch in the shifter is faulty common fault 2 Choices replace the microswitch or connect the 2 wires from the microswitch together this will bypass the shiftlock
Anything to keep her from buying a fatmobile (SUV).. Common issue: There's a microswitch in the shifter assembly, iun the console that gets flaky after a while. It's about $20 for the kit, and 1-2 hours to replace. When the switch fails to close with the lever in Park, the lock solenoid doesn't release, wo you have to press the manual release button (Does the 96 have this?)

Won't this cause the solenoid to actuate whenever the brakes are pressed in any gear? I'm thinking the switch might be there to save the solenoid life.
The switches are about $18 or so at FCPGroton.com.
