Hey, I'd do anything to save a buck, too!
What are the proper tools and equipment? I can lay my hands on almost anything.
And, 30 years ago, I didn't do anything with cars but drive them and install stereos in them.
a clean, well lit, large, warm, dry place to work. a lift & a hoist would be nice, so would the jaws of life -- seriously, disengaging the transmission can be a b$^#h. obviously metric wrenches, but also wobbly extensions, allen keys & torx. angle screwdrivers -- all types. aircraft grease (made by Volvo for the Grippen). micrometer, various calipers. the list goes on & is fungible, hydraulic jacks can also be used. also it's not just tools. supplies are often critical.
the most important thing is another ride. you will always have forgotten something.
i'm sorry for you, i remember doing something else w/ cars 30+ yrs. ago that was much more enjoyable than inserting stereos. finally a young relative is always handy. they gain knowledge. you get four hands, two of them w/o back problems.
LOL! Yes, I was mechanically declined for years, but was electronically savvy. After I started working in electronics they put me in Electro-mechanicals (I was an analog tech working for a company that was mostly digital) so I learned gears and gear boxes and solenoids, and that was easily transferrable to cars. Now I do most of my repairs myself, excent for the really hairy stuff.
As far as a 'young relative' when I started working on my own cars my daughter was 12, and you missed the most important aspect! SMALL HANDS!!!! :)
we will just say that i'm adept @ anything i turn my hand to. "hands" are not something, of which, i'm ignorant. one nephew has big, beefy, capable hands -- my niece has small, deft hands, she also has a unique mind. when she is old enough i expect her to kick my my butt @ the track.
