'98 V70 AC

If the system runs low on refrigerant it stops working. Normally there is a small leakegae on those systems, so if you havent have it checked in years, thats where i would start.

What do you mean when you say the compressor is working, does it go on and off? And how often?

If you take it in for service, they will check the coolant level. If it is low, they will look for leaks and refill. If it isn't low, they will check for a malfunctions such as a clogged evaporator, bad clutch, compressor, thermostat, etc. About the only thing you can do is make sure it is not a belt or fuse.

Actually I might have been wrong about the compressor working because a few days ago I noticed a noise that something sounded like it was cycling on and then trying to do something and then going off and that would repeat again and again. I thought it was the engine but then realized it was the AC and so turned it off. The first time after that I tried to use the AC I found that there was no cool air to speak of. Ugh. I don't really have funds to do an AC service right now and my brother is an AC pro so I should have him check it, but he is at the other end of the trip I have to take. I am afraid of another costly repair.

If its just a refill i would guess like 100-150$, thats if i translate european prices directly to US$. If the compressor cycles on and off fast after eachother its an indication of low refrigerant level.
