DETROIT (AP) - Volvo is recalling 460,000 vehicles worldwide because a wiring problem could cause a fan to overheat and burn.

The recall involves S-80 and S-60 sedans and X-C-70 and V-70 wagons from the 1999 through 2001 model years. About 150,000 vehicles in North America are included in what the company says is the largest recall in Volvo's history.

A company spokesman says there have been no injuries related to the defect, which has caused seven reported vehicle fires.

A defect in the main cooling fan -- which cools the engine -- can cause a short circuit and force the fan to keep running. If the fan's motor overheats, a fire could occur.

Volvo will replace the fan for free in all affected vehicles.

Does that include the old shape V70? [I didn't think that the new shape S-80-ish V70 was around as early as MY1999]

I believe this only applies to the P2 based cars, i.e. the S80, new style V70 and S60. The S80 was introduced for the 1999 model year, this is why 1999 is listed as the first model year for the recall. The fan and controller are completely different (and apparently much more reliable!) on the older, 850 based cars.

Looks like not all 1999 S80s are covered by the recall. I called Volvo to inquire and they said mine isn't part of the recall.

All 99 S80's had a radiator fan 110 recall. Call or stop by any Volvo dealer , they can run your VIN to see if the fan recall has been done. If not, it will be done for free. BD

141 is the same as 110 just that it is been re-released to include most of the lines
