Black Tape Around Windows

Hi. What is the black tape around the windows and where do I get it? It is starting to peel and look awful on my 89 240. It looks like it comes off pretty easy. What is this crap!

I assume you refer to the black covering the chrome pieces surrounding the windows etc? My 92 wagon has that too. From what I think I read, they used that on certain color schemes (mine is silver), maybe because they thought black looked better than chrome on some models? Mine is also starting to peel a bit, but not very much so it's not an eye sore (yet). I would prefer chrome, but have other things to do than try to peel off this tape...

Not that, he's referring to the black trim tape that goes along the base of the windows over the painted sheetmetal of the body. The paint shops I've dealt with usually clean it off and use black paint there instead.

Right. I am referring to the tape just below the window on the door. It is cracked and shrinking upwards towards the window. It looks awful. I was hoping to find a part number so I could replace it but can't seem to find it anywhere.

I don't know about getting it off, buyt the parts catalog does list the stuff as an applied tape: For the '89 240:

For the 242 - 271471 and 271472 (stripes kit - doors) For the 245 - 274098 and 274097 " " " " *one number is L side, the other is R side

Whether these are still available or not, and how to remove the old ones is another story....
