Well, I think the time has arrived to look for a replacement for my old '89 240 estate b230k.

I am always interested to read on this group of 240/740's reaching over

300k miles.

The one I have has only 186.xxx miles but has fallen victim to rust. Got it through the last 3 mot's with welding.

However, I do not think it would have reached the huge number of miles often mentioned on the group. It has had regular servicing by volvo so that should not have caused the problems which are, knocks when cold, manual box getting noisy, lots of squeask and rattles. Also, drivers seat has fallen to bits.

I think it started to wear out at around 160k miles.

So, I just wonder whether it is normal or the exception for 300k miles plus and, whether the b230k tends to have a shorter life.

Also, in the uk, the motorway speed limit is 70 mph so wonder if the high speed motorway work has an effect.

This may all sound a bit negative but I will be sad to see it go although looking forward to a seat with springs and a radio that works.

Radio - what's that? ;-) Your comment brought back memories of buying my first new car, a 245. It had snowed the night before and after riding 50 k on my Beemer, I figured it was time for four wheels. I called the dealer at 9:00 AM and asked if a car I had looked at could be ready for 12:00. He said that they would not have time to put a radio in. I replied that I was too busy to listen to a radio and I ended up driving for 18 months before I finally got around to buying one. I'm sure that your new car will be even better with a functionning radio, and a CD player, too.

I bought an '81 244 in 1985 and it had well over 300K on it before I sold it to my buddy.

He loves it; the car runs like a top, tight engine, transmission, no squeaks.

The secret?

Frequent oil and filter changes plus regular DIY maintenance.

so far 320.000km no rust and humming like a kitten. Wish I could buy me another one...

I didn't mention in my previous post, but my Dad has an 82 240 with

260,000 km on it. It seems in good enough shape to go for many more years but he is going to be gone first. There is a guy in New York with an 1800 with more than a million miles on it - not sure how much is original.

I've had several Volvos (primarily 544s and 240s) with over 300K miles on them when I finally sold them. BUT I live in Texas and rust on a car is relatively unheard of (except for yankee cars transplanted here).

Unfortunately, rust is a disease not worth trying to cure.

Try getting a 93 (last year) 240, or a later year (97) 850 and you'll have a good ride for several years.

Why not buy a POC for winter use and save the Volvo for more pleasant times of year?

That's my half Euro worth.

It depends on the type of mileage too, things in the US are much further apart than in the UK so cars generally have far more highway miles on them. The type of preventative maintenance the car gets and the amount one tinkers with it has a big part. My 740 is getting real close to

300K, I do have to fiddle with it occasionally but so far nothing major has broken.

2.6 million last I heard. It's had the engine rebuilt 2 or 3 times, couple of gearboxes, that's a whole lot of miles though.
