I am interested in the new S40T and read that this model Volvo and some others are using a cartridge type drop-in oil filter?? Seems a step back to
1950 autos. Is there any or could there be any advantage for the owner?? I suppose that it will be a messy replacement deal and the filters will be a high cost exclusive Volvo part. Anyone know any thing about this and the associated filter cost. Greetings, some of us drive volvos and ride motorbikes (go figure) but all my bikes have always been cartridge type oil filters. As long as you drain the oil first, it shouldn't be any more messy. I don't know how many times I've spilt oil out of the filter on the 240 and 940 while manipulativing the old filter away. A bit of rag in place and it shouldn't be too bad.

Actually, Volvo have delivered themselves of a reason for the use of the "old" type of oil filter innards. It all relates to their seriousness about being "green," the idea being to not put metal into landfills any more than is absolutely necessary. Canniter units are a lot more intrusive than are cartridges, if somewhat less than equally convenient.
