New oil filter???

Hi Ed: I was surprised when I found this out as well, but here's a procedure I wrote up to explain the differences and shed some light on why the change was made.

Greetings, some of us drive volvos and ride motorbikes (go figure) but all my bikes have always been cartridge type oil filters. As long as you drain the oil first, it shouldn't be any more messy. I don't know how many times I've spilt oil out of the filter on the 240 and 940 while manipulativing the old filter away. A bit of rag in place and it shouldn't be too bad.

Actually, Volvo have delivered themselves of a reason for the use of the "old" type of oil filter innards. It all relates to their seriousness about being "green," the idea being to not put metal into landfills any more than is absolutely necessary. Canniter units are a lot more intrusive than are cartridges, if somewhat less than equally convenient.
