Speedometer problem on 240 '86 model

Hello,

I have had my Volvo to a workshop were they have done some bodywork on it, fixed some rust. But when I got it back the speedometer didn't work. I have a pretty good idea on what could have happened that causes the problem. Probably the signal cable to the speedometer have been cut of somehow. But I want to have some clue on where to locate this cable before I start ripping out seats and everything. Does anyone knows were this cable is plugged in? Except into the speedometer, which is quite obvious. Someone says it is attached to the gearbox, and someone says it is attached to the rear axel. My Volvos is a Volvo 240 GLE, with B230A non-turbo engine, '86 model, with an electronic speedometer (not wired).

Thanks in advance for comments or suggestions.

Oh, I forgot, it has a 5-speed manual transmission (not overdrive). I don't know if that matters.

I got a 245-87 once, the speedometer stopped working, but I gave the dashboard a really great hit with my (open) hand (above the instruments), and it started to work again. That's a really nice and cheap solution, try it, it may be some connection problems instead of cutted wires. :-) It costs nothing to test ... ;-) /Nisse

The sensor is in the rear axle, mounted in the differential cover to be more specific.

So that means that the sensor cable probably lays inside the car, under the seats and all the other interior that covers the floor, together with cables for rear lights, speakers etc.

I hope to find the problem real soon. It's quite difficult to keep the speed limits without the speedometer. :-)

Thank you for the informasjon.

I have located the problem. Some cables were cut off, in the hose of cables along the driver seat, under the carpet.

Thanks for your help!
