tyres?

I know this is probably a very easy question that I should know but can I swap tyres from alloy wheels on to ordinary rims? Bassdiva

Why?

To perpetuate the old wives tale that radials have to always stay on the same side of the car and rotate the same direction...

If the wheels are the same diameter and width, yes.

It depends on the size of the wheels. If they're both the same diameter and the width is within the range of what the tire will fit, then there's no problem with doing this.

Indeed. There are *some* tyres which are directional and have tread patterns designed to clear away water better when rotating the right way. These *do* need to be installed the right way round. Even so, they don't need to be on the same side of the car 'cos you can simply turn them round on the rims if you swap them side to side. However, such tyres are relatively rare (in the UK at any rate) and most tyres simply don't *care*!

Thanks everyone, this stuff about directional tyres, I remember a few years ago getting a couple of good looking seconds put on the back of a car, not realizing that one was directional and also facing in the wrong direction. The result was that the first time I had to brake on a quite a wet day I found my self sliding sideways towards someone's nice new fence. I managed to stop with out damaging anything and inspected the tyres, found the offending tyre and went carefully back to the garage that had fitted it. I spoke to the young man who had fitted it and was told that I didn't know what I was talking about and it would not have caused any problems it must have been oil on the road!!! Luckily his manager over heard this conversation and took over, changing the tyre for a new one and promising to retrain his employee. My thoughts are, how many others out there need a more thorough training. Bassdiva
