I'm sorted now, thanks to the AA, but... if the battery goes completely dead on my V40, how am I supposed to gain access to the car, since the locks all appear to need power to operate? Smash a window or something?
Btw, it's one of the first year V40s.

Yeah, never thought of using the key... OF COURSE I DID!!! Strewth...
Seriously, once the battery is flat, or disconnected, the key does nothing. The AA guy had to connect power to the starter motor to get juice into the system so we could unlock it. Is this really the only way?

The key should open it - exactly the same thing happened with our early S40 and I thought like you I couldn't get in - but the key did work.

Hmmm... that's rather interesting. The key does nothing in either driver or passenger door when there's no power in the system. Guess we need new locks or something. Thanks for taking the time to answer, chaps!

Don't know about the front doors, but I do know for a fact that my key will open the tailgate of my 2000 V40 without involving any electrical stuff.
