Volvo 740 Turbo redux - Best starter to use?

I like the older style big Bosch starters, they seem to hold up well. The last time I replaced one I didn't feel like going to a junkyard so I had the owner of the car pick up a rebuilt starter from Schucks, normally I'd be dubious about a cheap rebuilt but it had a lifetime warranty and has held up so far.

Just get one from the Volvo dealer. Don't bother with rebuilds or aftermarket stuff.

Or get a couple from a U Pull It wrecking yard.

Well if you've got money to burn you can go that route, they run about $330 at the dealer for a remanufactured unit, or you can order a new OEM one online for around $140 or rebuild for around $110.

I've done that, one was dead when I got it, the other died a month later, that's when we bought a reman from Schucks and it's held up. Would have ordered it online but needed it now.

That's what I did; I bought one from NAPA for something under $200 US. IIRC it was a reman Bosch unit and it has worked fine for 8 or 9 years now. I think the newer tiny starters are a worse gamble when buying rebuilt.

I've heard that as well, the older bigger ones do feel more solidly built, given a choice I use the older style as replacements.

My confidence with a remanufactured unit through a dealer would be a lot higher than those available through the local parts house.

Nothing more than third party stuff.
