Volvo 740GLE all lights "on" - what's the problem?

I have a 1986 760GLE. It runs fine until this evening - 4 lights (Battery light, warning light, brake lght, plus one more) turned on all the time. The engine runs, but these 4 lights stay "ON". What's the problem? How to fix it? Thanks.

Victor,

You've got one of two problems, number one being a possible short to ground of the wire coming from the voltage regulator on your alternator, to the warning lamps, the other being failed regulator/alternator.

Can you verify that your alternator is working ok? are the headlamps brighter, heater fan motor faster, when the engine is running?

If these are all the lights that are normally on when the ignition is on, but with the engine not running, then your alternator is dead.

Check your Voltage Regulator/Brush assembly. Mine went out last week and exhibited the same symptoms, the brushes were worn to about 1/4 inch. I snagged one off of a BMW at the Pick a Part, they didn't even charge me for it. It takes all of 5 minutes to swap out the VR.

Check the small Red wire @ the back of the alternator if this has become brittle you will lose your charging system

It turned out my alternator was dead. After it's been replaced my 740 is running faithfully again. Thanks to all who repied.
