The is a metal pipe which attaches to the water pump, how does the pipe connect to the pump and what does it do.

It is o-ringed, pushes into a recess in the pump and is supported by a brace a couple inches from the pump. IIRC, it is a heater connection.

There's a rubber gasket on it, it sticks in a hole in the back of the pump and clamps in place with a bolt. It runs around to the back of the motor and connects to a rubber hose that goes to the heater core.
