I hardly ever even want to use it, but having something like that not functioning on the car bugs me. Before I take it to a shop, are there some simple things to check, e.g. a blown fuse?

That's a start. There are troubleshooting methods for the cruise on the a2's, I suspect the a3's are the same.

There is also a cruise control module that you might want to check. It is located inside the dashboard, behind the headlight switch.
