2003 Jetta Wagon - canoe tie downs??

Could you attach some stop blocks to your Thule rack on either side of the canoe on the front and back bar so the canoe can only move an inch either way? Using a Thule with it's rectangular bars, you shoudl be able to make some stops easy enough.

You probably already know about this, but what about the "tow eye" that hooks to the front of the jetta? It's in the trunk in the spare tire well and it screws into the front of the jetta.

Yes, I know about the "tow eye", thanks. The problem is that there's only 1 on the front and the back and they are deep on the right (passenger) side of the car. I usually like to keep the canoe in the centre of the car. On other cars and 2nd generation "A2" jetta frames there was a secure point on each corner of the frame.

It's common practice to use y straps with canoe's to distribute the secure points. Is there a place to weld a secure point on the left (drivers) side of the 2003 jetta wagon? or is there another solution?

even the thule and yakima systems say to secure the 2 ends of the canoe to the bumper. not a easy thing on the sealed jetta bumper.

Now you anoyed me. I rolled my 2003 Jetta TDI wagon out of the garage. I removed the black grill that covers the horns. Behind there are two bolts that are some part of the body or frame. They look rather solid. If I were you I would get out my metal band saw, my mig welder and create something that would bolt on using those two bolts. I would make that tow bolt longer on the other side somehow. The goal would be to have something that sticks out a bit so I would not rub my bumber so much with the lashing straps. Canoe and wagon are do-able.
